The Perks of being a JMC Major

Every department has special perks to it and the JMC department is no different. Being in the JMC department, you have access to the building after hours, all the different rooms, computers with expensive and professional software, and many other things. I think one of the biggest perks, however, is the high-tech equipment you are able to check out. The JMC department wants its students to have experience with this equipment but they also know that most students can’t afford them so they provide it for them. However, not just anyone can check out the equipment; you must pass certain criterion such as:

  • You are a JMC major
  • You’re taking high level JMC classes
  • If you’re not taking high level classes then you have special permission from the professors
  • You’re in a class that needs the equipment

You may ask, “Why must you be a part of those criterions?” It is because the department doesn’t want to check out the equipment to just anyone. The people that are checking them out must be reliable and trustworthy with all the very expensive equipment. So if you think you are reliable and trustable, and you find yourself saying “yes” I’ve done all those things or “yes” I fit into those categories, then you can sign a contract and check out a multitude of equipment including:

  • Camcorder
  • Microphone
  • Headset
  • XLR cable
  • Lighting kits
  • Tripod
  • Wireless microphone

Being able to check out these things can help change a B project to an A project because of how professional the results are going to be. However, with these perks comes the responsibility of returning the equipment in on time, not losing it, and ultimately taking care of it as if it were your own.
